Work Description:
Artist statement: Dear Grant, / You can’t take the artist statement too seriously. For the most part, people just gloss over them. But on the off chance that someone spends the time to read your statement, you should give them an idea about why you make what you do and what you are thinking about. / Giving the reader something to consider when looking at your work doesn’t need to be over done. Just talk about your interest in the interaction between the objects you make and the space in which you display them. Talk about how you are trying to create an experience in which the viewer develops a heightened awareness of the space occupied by the objects and of their own presence in that space. / You might also mention how you go about making the objects. For example, start by describing how you begin each piece with a drawing or a blueprint that has exact measurements for each component of the form. You use rounded forms and work precisely from drawings in order to achieve the visual complexity necessary to engage a viewer for more than a cursory look. Mention that when planning each piece, you carefully consider how it will interact with itself and with the other pieces through form and color relationships. If I understand your thinking, the goal of the relationships between pieces is to help viewers experience multiple pieces in an installation simultaneously. With a heightened awareness of their surrounding– conscious of their location to the objects, of each object’s location to each other, and of each object’s relation to itself– viewers will have understood the work as you intended for it to be understood¬. / Good luck on the statement, / Grant Gustafson
