American sculptor and installation artist. She studied in Canada at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver (1977–80), and the University of Victoria (1980–82), before completing an MFA in sculpture at Yale University, New Haven, CT (1984–5). From the mid-1980s she exhibited internationally and taught at a number of institutions. In 1995 she staged a major solo exhibition at the DIA Center for the Arts, New York. Stockholder is known for her highly inventive assemblages that combine elements of sculptural, painterly and architectural language. She draws together a broad pool of materials, often using colour to unite incongruous objects and give sense to awkward juxtapositions. Her work is often seen in relation to the painted assemblages of Robert Rauschenberg, dealing with similarly formal questions of visual order and materiality. Her large-scale installations display a hands-on playfulness with a wide range of materials, as in Edge of Hot House Glass (plants, Gro-lites, aerated concrete block, halogen lights, paint, black velvet, newspaper maché, cable, beads, balls, concrete, building materials, approx. 11×12 m, exh. Nîmes, Gal. des Arennes, 1993). The intended effect of such a work was, as she suggested, to create narratives and metaphors that may arise through the selection and combination of found materials. The emphasis placed on the physical qualities of her installations, combined with the dematerializing effects of colour and configuration, evoke a response that is both immediate and poetic.
