Ferdinand Hodler (Swiss, 1853-1918)

Swiss painter, born in Bern. Hodler's family was decimated by tuberculosis, casting a shadow over the rest of his life and career. He worked as a sign painter, then painted landscapes for the tourist market, before entering the École des Beaux-Arts at Geneva (1872). He visited Madrid (1878–9), Paris (1891), and Italy (1905), although Geneva remained his principal base. By 1885 Hodler was intimate with the symbolists, and his style changed radically; in 1890 his large picture Night (Berne, Kunstmus.) was highly acclaimed in Paris, establishing his reputation among the leading Symbolist painters of the day. He exhibited with the Rosicrucians during 1891–2, developing his theories of 'Parallelism'—the expressive and symbolic power of repetitive, near-symmetrical patterns of lines, forms, and colours giving coherence to simplified, monumental figures and landscapes, seen in The Disillusioned (1892; Munich Neue Pin.); From 1894 to 1899 he taught in Fribourg, and undertook major mural commissions in Geneva (1896) and Zurich (1897–1900): monumental paintings based on Swiss history and landscape. In 1903 he joined the Munich Sezession. A forerunner of Expressionism, his work was influential throughout Europe; he was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900, and the Legion of Honour in 1913.
